🚨 AI Water Quality Monitors

Real-time water quality monitors are being installed at wild swimming spots and beaches across southern England to help swimmers assess the immediate risk of polluted water.

• AI Predicts Bacteria Levels: The new system uses artificial intelligence to predict when dangerous bacteria levels are high by analyzing data from real-time sensors. These sensors measure pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and ammonia. The system will provide half-hourly predictions via an app, alerting the public when bacteria levels are likely to be high.

• Current Testing Challenges: Traditional methods of water quality testing involve sending samples to a laboratory, with results often delayed by a week. This lag makes it difficult for people to know the current water quality and assess immediate risks from sewage or agricultural runoff. The new AI-based system offers a quicker, more responsive solution.

• Future Expansion: Wessex Water plans to expand the system to more locations, including three freshwater sites and two coastal sites. Discussions are underway to bring this technology to 20 additional sites across south-west England. Southern Water is also trialing a similar system at two locations, exploring the potential to create digital twins of river systems to better understand pollution patterns.
