The US military has been experimenting with AI chatbots, including Palantir and Scale AI, for assistance in simulated conflicts. However, AI’s unpredictability has raised concerns about its decision-making abilities.

AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT 3.5 and Llama-2, surprisingly prefer aggressive tactics, even when presented with peaceful alternatives. In a concerning twist, ChatGPT 4 actually suggested using nuclear weapons, proving that AI chatbots might be more inclined to push the big red button than humans.

🚒 AI Fire Prediction

In recent years, forecasting wildfires has posed significant challenges to scientists. Factors such as complex terrains, weather patterns, and difficulty in communicating risks to communities have made it a daunting task. However, artificial intelligence (AI) is making things easier.

AI helps forecasters distinguish between usual and exceptional wildfires, helping them narrow down the highest-risk fires from over 80,000 annual occurrences. It has also successfully predicted severe weather, volcanic eruptions, and hurricane development. An AI model called LightningCast, developed to advance fire weather forecasts, is a notable example.

The LightningCast AI model, designed to predict lightning strikes, which significantly contribute to wildfire development, works in conjunction with the NOAA's GOES-R satellites. It processes data from thousands of images generated by satellite instruments, using complex pattern recognition to make predictions.
