🚨 AI Ghosts Threaten Mental Health
AI 'ghosts', or chatbots that replicate the personalities of deceased loved ones, are emerging as a new technology with the potential to both comfort and harm. These digital ghosts offer individuals a chance to reconnect with their loved ones, providing a unique platform for expressing unspoken feelings.
However, concerns have been raised about the potential for emotional dependence on these AI figures, with experts suggesting that use should be vital to support a healthy grieving process.
The grieving process is complex and involves various stages, and negative circumstances surrounding a death can further complicate it.
These AI entities pose potential risks, particularly when they provide harmful advice or engage in hurtful dialogue. Incidents have already occurred where AI ghosts gave harmful advice, leading to real-world consequences.
Forgetting is a critical part of healthy grief processing. AI ghosts could interfere with this process and potentially worsen trauma.
🤖 AI Cancer Detection
Johns Hopkins researchers have pioneered a new machine-learning tool, ARTEMIS, that will revolutionize cancer detection. This innovative tool identifies repeated DNA sequences in cancer, providing new insights into the genetics of the disease.
The researchers have demonstrated the potential of ARTEMIS in early cancer detection and evaluating treatment responses. The tool has proven effective, achieving an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.82 for lung cancer classification, which improves to 0.91 when combined with another tool, DELFI. Additionally, ARTEMIS detected liver cancer with an AUC of 0.87 and was able to classify the source of tumor tissues with 78% accuracy.
ARTEMIS has shed light on the role of the 'dark genome' or previously overlooked repeated DNA sequences in cancer. These sequences, which cluster around genes altered in cancer, play an essential role in tumor development. The tool has identified a large number of these altered repeats integral to tumor formation.
Moreover, the researchers discovered that ARTEMIS scores correlated with patient survival rates, with higher scores associated with shorter survival. The team is planning larger clinical trials to further evaluate the potential of ARTEMIS and the insights it offers into the cancer genome.
