🤖 Google Layoffs

Google is reportedly laying off hundreds of employees from its ad sales division, particularly the 'Large Customer Sales' team, which caters to its largest advertising clients.

The layoffs are attributed to the increasing use of AI to replace human jobs within the company. Google has recently been incorporating generative AI features into its advertising products. This includes a natural-language chatbot that assists users in navigating ad products and a system that autonomously creates ad materials based on input from ad purchasers.

The move is part of a larger trend within Google, which has been experiencing a series of layoffs across various departments since last year. While not explicitly mentioned in the company's internal memo, the AI-driven layoffs appear to be a sign of the times, with AI making redundant human roles.

While it's no laughing matter for those affected, the situation has a touch of irony, as employees are essentially automating themselves out of their jobs.

🚨 AlphaGeometry

Google DeepMind is making geometry look like a piece of pi with its new AI system called AlphaGeometry.

This system combines a language model with a symbolic engine to solve complex geometric problems. It has proved an effective mathematical tool, performing on par with top high school students by solving 25 out of 30 geometry problems.

This is a significant leap from the previous state-of-the-art system designed in 1978, which could only solve 10 problems. The AI recognizes patterns, predicts steps, and employs formal logic and rules to generate solutions.

The advancements made by AlphaGeometry have broader implications for fields like computer vision, architecture, and theoretical physics. It represents a significant step towards sophisticated problem-solving skills in machines.
