The first program to pass the Turing test, a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human, was called "ELIZA." It was created by MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum in the 1960s and simulated conversation by using pattern matching and substitution methodology to respond to user input. Despite its relatively simple design, ELIZA was able to convince some people that they were conversing with a human being.
