Google AI Chip
Google is making strides in the AI industry with its new proprietary chip, Axion.
Google's AI-focused Chip: Google announced its new AI chip, Axion, which has been specifically designed to handle massive AI data in clusters of thousands of chips. With a 30% improvement over existing general-purpose chips, it is the first of its kind meant to support AI in data centers.
Availability and Market Strategy: Customers can access the Axion chip through Google's cloud business; it is not available for direct purchase, which enables Google to stay out of direct competition with Intel and Nvidia. Despite this, Google's entry into the chip market is viewed as a positive development for the industry.
Competition Heating Up: Both Intel and Nvidia have recently announced their own AI-focused chips. Intel's Gaudi 3 chip is set for release in the third quarter and is touted as being superior to Nvidia's upcoming H100 chip. This has led to an increase in competition within the chip market, with companies vying for dominance in the AI chip industry.
The introduction of Google's Axion chip has had noticeable market effects, with Google's parent company's stock rising 2.4% and closing up 1.28% at around $158. This clearly indicates that the competition in the AI chip market is heating up, with Intel and Nvidia facing increasing pressure following Google's entry.
