🚨 AI Apocalypse

Researchers believe there's a 5% chance that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. Over 58% of the 2,700 researchers agree that AI could lead to catastrophic consequences.

But before you start preparing for a "Terminator" style apocalypse, remember that the threat of AI is more philosophical than physical. Sure, AI is already causing societal harms like biased decision-making and job elimination.

We've even seen autocratic governments misusing facial recognition technology for shady purposes. It sounds like a plot straight out of a dystopian novel, right? But we don’t want this to start sounding like fear-mongering. It's time we start seriously discussing and taking steps to mitigate the negative impacts of AI.

The good news is that the current AI systems can't make complex, multilayered decisions. Heck, they don't even have autonomous access to critical infrastructure to cause significant damage.

The main threat lies in us getting a tad too comfortable and letting AI erode our decision-making skills. Should we really let a machine decide whether pineapple belongs on pizza? So, while we're all for advancement, let's not forget the importance of ethical considerations in AI development. After all, we don't want to end up with a superintelligent AI that thinks it's smarter than us. Or do we?

💊 AI Drug Discovery

Just when you thought science couldn't get any cooler, it goes ahead and pulls a rabbit out of its lab coat.

Scientists have discovered the first new antibiotics in over 60 years using AI. Artificial Intelligence is out here, solving medical mysteries.

These smartpants scientists used a deep learning model (think of it as a brainy version of Alexa) to predict the activity and toxicity of new compounds. They put AI to work, screening approximately 12 million commercially available compounds.

They found compounds from five different classes with predicted activity against the MRSA bacteria. This bacteria is a tough nut to crack, causing infections that can range from mild to life-threatening.
