🗞 News of the day
🤖 AI Farming
Farmers are turning to robots and AI to replace harmful herbicides in agriculture.
Automated Agriculture: Nearly 200 individuals, including farmers and engineers, gathered in Salinas, California, to witness AI-powered machines like LaserWeeder that use lasers to eliminate weeds without chemicals. These machines promise to reduce costs, increase yields, and improve soil health by avoiding traditional herbicides.
Health Risks of Herbicides: Traditional chemicals such as paraquat, dacthal, and glyphosate are linked to severe health issues like cancer and Parkinson's disease. California is working on Assembly Bill 1963 to ban paraquat and aims to transition to safer pest management by 2050.
Economic and Environmental Impact: While robots could revolutionize the $50 billion agriculture industry and reduce environmental harm, they also pose a threat to farm jobs, as seen with the mechanical tomato harvester in the 1950s. Despite resistance from established pesticide companies, the push for automated farming technology continues to grow.

🚨 Spot AI Fakes Using Galaxy-measurement Tools
Researchers discover a cool way to spot AI fakes using galaxy tools
Scientists at the University of Hull have come up with a clever way to bust deepfake images by checking out the reflections in people's eyes. They borrowed tools from astronomers who study galaxies to look at how light bounces off eyeballs.
It turns out that if a pair of eyes are lit by the same light source, they should have matching reflections. Many AI-generated images miss this detail, so the reflections in each eye often don't match up, making it easier to spot fakes.
The team created an automated system to detect these eye reflections, running them through fancy indices to compare the left and right eye. They even used the Gini coefficient, which is usually used for measuring income inequality, to check how light is spread out in the eyes. If the light reflection is all over the place, it's closer to a value of 0, and if it's concentrated in one spot, it's nearer to 1.
They also looked at other parameters astronauts use, like concentration and smoothness, to measure light. This method can scan loads of images quickly and spot fakes easily.
Of course, this technique isn't perfect. If AI gets smarter and starts creating more realistic eye reflections, this method might not work as well. Plus, it needs a clear, close-up view of the eyes, which isn't always possible. Sometimes, even real photos can have wonky reflections due to weird lighting or editing, leading to false positives.
